Optimize Your PDF For SEO
By Andrew Thomson
When it comes to search engine optimisation PDF files and documents are left ‘by the wayside’ which I believe is something we should not neglect. Most PDF documents contain valuable, potentially searchable content which search engines like Google would finds interesting if people were to take more time SEO tuning them. More and more, I am seeing PDF’s appear in search results – so why? The reason is simple, people like me and tweaking them, now you can too. Points to consider when optimising (or optimizing as it is spelt in North America) your PDF for search engines: • If you can try and create an HTML version of the PDF you are trying to tune for SEO • Always write-protect your PDF, don’t make it easy for people to steal or copy the information your provide • Create links from the document to good, strong, relevant sources you are talking about. For example if you are talking about flowers that you were reading about, make sure to quote the source like so http://www.localseoadvice.com.au/2010/09/29/flowers-shepparton/ • If you have inserted any images ensure that you have added alt tags to them • If you are creating a PDF for the company you own, or the company you work for ensure you put that name in the ‘author’ field • Always use concise, easy to read, and original content. This is especially important if you are say, for example, a retailer of Nike Shoes and you stock a product that 1000’s of other retailers stock. Most of the online retailers, I can assure you, will have copied the description that Nike has on their website – sometimes ‘word for word’ – this is fraught with danger and will plonk you way below every other result for that particular product search. If you choose to do original content for that product there is a great chance you will eventually 'leap frog' most of the competition • Choose good quality, and well researched keywords, then add them to the ‘keyword’ field – which is the equivalent to the meta • Optimise your titles, this is very important. For those who do not know titles are essentially the blue writing you will see Google or other search engines list in the SERP • Use H2 headings where possible • When naming your PDF make sure it contains at least one of the keywords you are trying to optimise
