Keyword Research For SEO

By Andrew Thomson

As an owner of many websites myself I would suggest being extra careful with the keyword research tools you use and the way you research these keywords. Using Google keyword tool alone is fraught with dangers. You must also use other keyword tools to get a balanced view of what people are really searching for and to what volume.

I remember targeting the keyword 'baby bottles' on one of my sites and, according to Google, the words were searched 90,000 per month in Australia. So, I thought, if I could get to rank #1 I would be very happy...I did get to #1 after about 18 months for that search in Australia and I reckon it is more like 4,000 searches per month, not the promised 90,000 - oh I wish.

However, if you really want the most accurate measure of a keywords search rate in Google there is not a more accurate reporting method that Google Adwords. That being said, Adwords, in my opinion, is only accurate if you can afford to pay the big dollars for the 1st page. That means that if your word ends up on page 2, you get 100 people searching that word that day, but only 2 people got to page 2, you will only see 2 searches for your keyword on that day...this is just my opinion and is a way that Google skews results.

So, the moral of the story is to spend months searching for good keywords that suit your business, don't go for the highest searched words, rather try and find a combination of niche keywords and well searched keywords. Try and use some words that are a call to action too like 'buy jeans', rather than 'jeans'. Start with 5 keywords for the first few months, then jump to 10 for the next 6-12 months, then you can head to 20 after 2 years. - the reason is simple, your words will get washed out and you will not have the content to support many keywords in the beginning.
