7 Tips For Improving Your Google Places Rank

By Andrew Thomson

Google Places, even with years of research, dissection, and even more research still remains partly mysterious and mostly frustrating.

That being said, there are many things you can do to improve your rankings in Google Places, most of which your competitors are not doing, so in the long run, you may end up outranking them.

1. Business Address In The City Of Search: This is one of the most important factors in any ranking result for your business in Google Maps. So, when you create your listing, ensure that all the address details are completely accurate. This accuracy must also extend to citation websites like the Yellow Pages. If there are inconsistencies in the information across these mediums Google Places will pick them up and no doubt rank you lower, if you are going to go to the effort ensure you get it right. This may be even more important if you change your business location. DO NOT USE A PO BOX.

2. Website Information: Onsite information is also critical when Google Places gives you a map rank. Like in point 1 inconsistency here can also breach the integrity of your map listing. Make sure you have a clear and easy to read ‘Contact Us’ page with all your contact details on it, that is easily collaborated with that on your Google Places listing

3. Local Phone Number: This is also one of the most crucial factors in both verifying your listing, and actually give you a map rank. Avoid mobile/cell phone and free call numbers at all costs

4. Claim Your Listing: If you have listed with directory sites like the Yellowpages, your listing will eventually end up in Google Places – as directory sites act as trusted ‘feeders’ to Google. The problem for business owners is that these ‘feeder’ sites provide unverified information, even though they are coming from what Google defines as a ‘trusted source’. So, as a business owner, it should be of a very high priority to ‘claim your listing’ within Google Places which will allow you to avoid it getting hijacked by a competitor, and allow you to add a whole host of other business information that a prospective customer

5. Link Building: It is quite simple; the more links you have pointing to your website, the more important Google will think you are. The key here is to have high quality links and have them as closely related to your industry as possible. There is little point of having a link from a baby toy website, if you own a florist

6. Reviews: Customer reviews are a critical part of the Google Places rankings process, but they are also a fantastic and truthful way for future customers to get a feel for your business and its products. Reviews can come directly from Google account holders or from directory sites - the sites that feed Google Places reviews do change from country to country. Offer customers incentives for giving reviews, this is a very effective way to get good quality, original and positive content on your Google Places listing.

7. Reply To Reviews: A new feature in Google Places is having the ability to reply to reviews. This feature should be seen as a free for all in terms of content freedom and gives you free licence to either refute what a customer is saying, or thank a customer for their thoughtful and positive comments on your business – this function has extreme SEO potential.
